Experience the NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE in new and imaginative ways with this eclectic collection of duets. Familiar melodies like Zuni Sunrise, Amazing Grace, and Pachelbel Canon as well as relatively unknown selections such as Vamudara and Japanese Lullaby, will energize and inspire flute musicians of all levels with music from around the world. This exciting collection of duets is a collaboration of the unique and creative skills of Brent Haines, established and renowned native flute maker, and Wil Holm, singer, musician, and conductor.Forward: Our purpose in publishing Duets from Around the World for Native Ameri-can Flutes is to further enrich the musical offering for the Native American flute (NAF). We wish to express our gratitude to the many talented musicians and craftsmen who have come before us and created the wonderful tradition of the Native American flute. This rich heritage of music opens the heart and touches the soul. The peace and healing that is manifested through the magnificent tone of this instrument is well known to anyone who has played or listened to the NAF. In our own personal journeys we have each found this hauntingly beautiful instrument to be a wonderful tool in expressing the music of our hearts. Like many NAF players, we had a desire to play the flute with other musicians and consequently developed several duets to play for our local flute circle and respec-tive places of worship. It has been an enriching experience for us and we would like to share this experience with others. It is our hope NAF players of all lev-els will find this book a useful resource in their own musical journeys. Through our study and enjoyment of this instrument we have discovered that not only does it offer an amazing versatility in the presentation of Native American music, but is also capable of expressing music from other parts of the world such as the Ireland, Africa, Tibet and Japan. Duets in this book are grouped in four sections; Native American, Europe/UK, Africa/Asia and Carols. Each section is preceded by a page of introduction that gives information about the music and offers suggestions about musical in-terpretations. The enclosed instructional CD is designed to assist in learning the melody and rhythm of each duet part. There are two sections to the CD. The first is the Duet section. Here each duet recorded in its entirety. Although the duets are re-corded in specific keys, they may be played in other keys as well. Refer to the chart on the following page for optional flute choices and tempos. Bear in mind that the CD will play the duets in the keys that are listed on the tablature and in the Recorded Key column of the chart. Notice that four duets are written for two flutes in two different keys. The second portion of the CD is recorded at a slower tempo and is designed so individual flute parts may be practice separately. Listen for the wood block at the beginning of each practice track to establish the rhythm. Long empty spaces are also notated with the wood block sound. Learn to play Flute 1 by practicing along with its track. Then listen to the track for Flute 2 while playing the part just learned for Flute 1, or vise versa.
