The poems in my chapbook Continuity express the love of nature and the music of words that I felt in my childhood and feel more deeply today. Music is at the center of this book. I write to be heard as much as to be read. The petroglyphs in the final poem “Continuity” tell of the ancient people’s regard for the nature around them. Our own survival depends on a similar deep regard for the life that surrounds us. This has never been more apparent to me than now, during the corona virus pandemic. I understand my life as part of the great continuum of cultures on this Earth. At the same time that our human lives are threatened, I take comfort in knowing that some of the same life forms that grow in the place where I live in southeastern South Dakota have existed for hundreds of millions of years, and they will be here long after I am gone. My best hope is that my poems will nurture life’s continuity. Norma C. Wilson
