On the occasion of an ordination for a prolific preacher the homilist said, “Preachers are communicators of divine grace.” Then he began to delineate the severity of the price preachers had to pay in order to be communicators of divine grace. The price for being a preacher is high. The price can be described with one word. That word is “Pain.” Pain has been defined as the sensation or feeling resulting from or accompanying some injury, derangement, overstrain, or obstruction of the physical powers; any distressing or afflicting emotion. Pain is grief, care, and trouble. (Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary) It even seems as though the more we may try to escape it the more we encounter it. Pain is the unavoidable reality for any authentic custodian of the gospel.
