The book you has been created thanks to the enthusiastic students participating in my Polish GCSE classes at our secondary school. Seeing their engagement and ambition to achieve their best, I created activities based on classic Polish fiction mirroring GCSE exam questions. Since I am also an English Literature and Language teacher, and an examiner, I realised that the activities allow students to develop skills relevant not only for Polish GCSE, but also for many other subjects at GCSE level. The workbook consists of three novellas – Janko Muzykant, Katarynka and ABC… – classic texts which in my opinion every Polish child should know. Each of these texts is divided into short sections followed by GSCE style questions – both in English and Polish. To answer the questions students need to use a range of skills: translating, predicting, summarising, selecting relevant explicit and implicit information as well as vocabulary awareness. I believe the workbook will enrich your teaching and learning experiences. For students – it is a great starting point to develop the skills needed for GCSE exams – not only the Polish ones. For teachers – it can be a great addition or supplementary resource for homework or starter activity during your Saturday School classes at GCSE level. For parents – a tool to re-live and revive those great memories when you read these stories at school and share it with your children. For me it was definitely a challenging, an adventure and a pleasure and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my work with all of you. I do hope that this book will be a pleasant and fruitful addition to your adventure with Polish in the United Kingdom.
