Pages:188
Format:Paperback
When researching Iraq and the region of Iraqi Kurdistan, one would inevitably come across Mustafa Barzani’s name and the legacy of his revolution; how Barzani lead the struggle for the Kurdish people for their right to exist, engaging in the guerrilla warfare against fascism in Iraq. Kurdish political and social history, including Barzani’s love for his people, has been documented by historians since the early 20th Century. However, is often written from non-Kurdish perspectives. Indeed, there are very few authentic written examples of Kurdish values, or detailed documentation of the issues that underpin the ongoing Kurdish struggle. In many texts, the Kurds are highlighted as great fighters, mountain warriors and tribal people inhabiting a beautiful countryside. The mountains ranges from Ararat to Zagros are famous for the incredible natural beauty, unique ecosystems, and the protection they provide against invaders. It is important to stress that the Kurdish people have fought predominantly for peace and the right not to have to fight and justify their existence within these mountains. An understudied and yet significant facet in understanding the Kurdish people lies in the principles and values of one region within Kurdistan the Barzan region hence why it has been such a central figure in this text, where descried Barzan as almost a living, breathing being in and of itself, as the very embodiment of Kurdish culture and values. A highly patriotic and sympathetic region to the Kurdish cause, Unfortunately, there is a long history of political and humanitarian struggle within the region. the oppressive domination of Aghas and unscrupulous landowners had controlled the region for decades, often using religion to suppress vulnerable people and spread hardship. Despite this turbulent history, however, the values of the sheikhdom began to emerge from within communities. Resistance to social and political persecution helped to solidify and consolidate the values merited by Mustafa Barzani, from which he formulated the concrete, powerful, philosophical, and humanitarian standard that he bequeathed to his nation. But what are those values, and how is the life and legacy of Mustafa Barzani reflected in those principles? How and why did Mustafa Barzani’s philosophies reflect patriotism, and what does patriotism mean with regards to his frame of reference? To answer these questions, his central values of respect and religious acceptance must be explored; how he defined tolerance, and how he rallied against racism and hatred. Only then can one consider how he fostered forgiveness and reconciliation among the population and with his adversaries
