Home is an exploration of the ideas of home and place, something often taken for granted in everyday life until that safe space is taken away. It explores the suitability of emergency accommodation and discusses the alternative places people find as a temporary ‘home’ when they are forced to sleep rough. In 2017 Cornwall Council set targets to reduce the number of families in temporary accommodation from approximately 250 to 170 by 2021 (www.cornwall.gov.uk, 2020). At the end of June 2021 there were in fact 580 families living in temporary accommodation and 500 single people in emergency accommodation (www.cornwall.gov.uk). ‘My Place’ is a collection of the experiences of a small number of people currently residing in temporary / emergency accommodation or sleeping rough in Cornwall. The participation of these participants has been fundamental in creating an accurate visual representation of their stories, and their collaboration has been essential in the creation of this body of work which not only highlights these lived experiences but shares authorship.
